Opera houses were designed and cherished as architectural treasures. They have always been a city’s prestigious and prized gem. Not only were they built to showcase budding artists and leading talent, but also to demonstrate the city’s high culture, power, and wealth.

Here’s a list of a few remarkable opera houses in the world that are unique in some way or another.

  • Sydney Opera House: One of the famous landmarks and a prestigious performing arts center in Australia. Sydney opera house was designed and built by Jorn Utzon and is a reflection of a huge sailing ship. The entire centre presents performances from opera, dance and classical music to musical theater, contemporary music, cabaret, film and more, and is a host of multiple performance venues.
  • The Metropolitan Opera House: Also known as The Met by opera enthusiasts all over the world. This is the largest opera house in the world with a seating capacity of 3,800. It is located at the Lincoln Center in New York City. It is a renowned opera house admired for its excellent acoustics and great sightlines.
  • Hungarian State Opera House: Considered to be the finest accomplishment of the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl, this opera house in Budapest is decorated with paintings and sculptures by the most acclaimed artists. It also features a huge chandelier crafted in bronze that is absolutely fascinating.
  • Bolshoi Theater: The Bolshoi Theater is smaller than other major opera houses, but is richly appointed with oriental carpets, silk-damask-covered walls, and velvet-upholstered chairs. Its four balconies and gallery, which encircles the orchestra seating, gives an intimate experience to the audience.
  • Teatro Colón: The Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires was designed by a succession of architects. It has the seating capacity for 2,500 people and a standing room for around 1,000 people. It was counted amongst the largest opera houses until The Sydney Opera House was built.
